Follow the steps of sanding, staining, and finishing to make your floor shiny again and look as good as new.

When you think of getting a house renovation, pay attention to the wooden floors if they are already worn out and losing luster. To make your hardwood floor look shiny again, you can follow these steps in refinishing.

Sanding

Sanding the hardwood floor can be done manually, but to make work easier and faster you can make use of a rental sanding machine. To start, make sure the floor is clear, removing all carpets and furniture. Check for any big splinters or protruding nails, these could tear up the sandpaper upon usage. Now head to a place where you can rent a floor sander. Ask for assistance from the person in-charge which ones the most efficient and make sure to have a demonstration before renting anything. Now, purchase an ample supply of sandpapers, depending on which level of grit that is needed for the floor sander. Attach the sand paper to the sander then run it over the floor with even and uniform strokes. Always remember to keep the machine moving while it’s turned on. You can make use of a shop vac to pick up any dust upon changing of sand papers. repeat the procedure alternating the heavier and lighter grit sandpaper.

Staining

If you want to give a more refined and shiny color to your floor rather than the natural look, you may opt for staining. Sweep all the dust and particles produced from the sanding process. Open windows to afford ventilation. Now using a stain and a clean rag, start staining at the corner of the floor to assure that it’s the desired stain that you want. Wait for the stain to dry, then if you are okay with the results you can proceed on staining the rest of the floor. You can make use of a paintbrush to have a more darker shade, and rags to maintain the lighter ones. Use long and uniform strokes. After the first coating dries, you can apply a second one if you want. Allow the floor to dry complete before proceeding into the next step.

Finishing

Use a polyurethane solution for the finishing process. Stir it well inside it’s container. Using a roller, apply the polyurethane solution on the floor with even strokes. Allow the floor to dry before doing the second coating. When the final coating is done, allow to dry overnight or up to to days before moving back the carpets and furniture.

You may find this refinishing methods a bit messy and inconvenient, but after you will see the results on the floor, you would surely think that all the hard work is worth it.
